When is hazmat required to be placarded?

Answers

  • The placarding requirements are broken up into 2 categories, Table 1 and Table 2. Materials that fall into Table 1 are considered the most dangerous, and include Division 1.1, 1.2, and 1.3 explosives, Inhalation hazards for Division 2.3 and 6.1, Division 4.3 Dangerous when wet, Division 5.2 organic peroxide Type B, and Class 7 radioactive materials. For Table 1 you are required to placard any amount.

Table 2 is all other hazard classes and divisions not in Table 1 and include Division 1.4, 1.5, 1.6 explosives, flammable and non-flammable gases, flammable liquids, corrosives, etc. Placarding is required for Table 2 materials when they are in a bulk package or when they are in a non-bulk package and the total weight of all Table 2 materials in the shipment meets or exceeds 1,001 pounds.

I have to teach Hazmat ELDT Theory and that's essentially the answer I give. The participants receive handouts that include tale 1 and table 2. It's based on the Type of Hazmat and Quantity of Hazmat.
